Emanuel Frey began playing classical piano in the early eighties and soon after began improvising. Entertaining from the stage with spontaneous ideas became one of his musical passions. Emanuel has also played in rock bands and toured as a keyboardist.

In 2008, Emanuel finished his studies at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) with a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Composing, Arranging and Music Production, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Computer Music. He then traded melody-oriented composition for a more beat-focused approach and began using Ableton Live, moving from a linear to a live production workflow. He develops Max for Live plug-ins that extend Live's functionality and are used by hundreds of musicians around the globe.
In 2011, Emanuel founded the Ableton Live User Group Zürich, a Switzerland-wide user group centered around Ableton Live as a production tool. He organizes events and meetings as part of this initiative.
Emanuel has been an Ableton Certified Trainer since 2013. At the School of Sound he teaches the Ableton Live Intro Producer and Ableton Live Advanced Producer courses, and he also offers private lessons.
In 2015, Emanuel founded the School of Sound, today one of the leading schools for electronic music production and club DJing in Switzerland. It offers modular courses for beginners, advanced and professional musicians, either individually or as diplomas of three, five or seven courses, at course locations in Zurich, Basel and Bern as well as in a virtual classroom. In addition, there are online masterclasses with internationally renowned artists and club masterclasses at Hive (Zurich) and Nordstern (Basel).
In his teaching, Emanuel relies on clear frameworks that guide musicians from the first beat to the finished release.
